Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
More buckle than swash - ging-grr
The term flogging a dead horse comes to mind here. I saw all the other Pirates movies in the cinema so decided that I would do the same for this one. I can't say I have hated any of the movies in the franchise but would find it hard to watch the 2nd and 3rd parts again when compared to the fantastic swashbuckling adventure that was the first movie of the series. Sadly part 4 left me feeling the same way. I definitely felt that it was overly long, they could easily have cut 30 minutes or so, predominantly from the first hour which just seems to plod along. The performances were average at best, I didn't think that Johnny Depp captured the same charm in the roguish Captain Jack Sparrow as he previously had. Ian McShane didn't come across as being the fearsome Blackbeard which really disappointed me as I think he plays a good foe normally and I even felt that much of Geoffrey Rush's (in my mind one of the finest Australian actors ever) was bland. Maybe it was a poor script that didn't give the actors much to work with. I also think that they may have introduced an even more annoying couple (if that's possible) and really hope that they don't resurface in further movies of the franchise. Overall if you liked the rest of the movies you'll like this and it's worth seeing once, though maybe not worth the price of the cinema ticket.
