X-Men: First Class
One of the best comic book movies of recent times - MicklesMe
Before going to see this movie, I heard many things. I heard it was better then The Dark Knight, I also heard it was so good that it could start a franchise as big as Star Wars. Both of these (as a comic book and star wars nerd) sounded like words of a mad mad to me. But did it live up to the hype? Did Vaughn play a blinder?
The story is about how X-men all began. It involves Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), a young intelligent man who has just graduated as a professor, but he has a gift. He has the abilty to read and control minds, and he believes he isn't alone. He believes that there are others out there that hold gifts. It is his goal to find these people to assure them they are not alone. He does this with the help of the CIA.
On the flip side, we have Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) , a man who as a child went trough the concentration camp and seen his mother killed infront of him, simply because he could not move a coin with his mind. Bizarre you may say, but this is his gift. He has the ability to control metal.
Erik is out for revenge for Sebastion Shaw (Kevin Bacon) as he is the man responsible for killing his mother. The CIA are also hot on his tracks as he is a threat to society, and can start nuclear warfare. This being said, Charles and Erik team up to form a class of other people with gifts to stop Shaw, with the same intention of mind. Or so we think.
For me, I loved every minute of this movie, from the eye-catching plot, the secret powers (some familier, some new) to the unexpected hilarious one liners. I found McAvoy was fantastic with his smooth performance that seemed natural to him.
But for me, it was all about Fassbender. He played the most bad-ass anti-hero I have seen in a movie in a very long time. For those who are fans of the X-men trade yo know what I'm talking about.
So back to the original question. Was it better then The Dark Knight? Can it start a phenomenon such as Star Wars? Well, I personally enjoyed it a lot more then Dark Knight. I found the story more enjoyable and the characters more likable. But this is just me. Many of the people I talked to afterwards believed it didn't hold a candle to Nolan's Batman. But I certainly did. As for starting a franchise as big as Star Wars, I wouldn't see that happening. But who knows, this could start a series of movies that will shake the box office like Star Wars did.
What did you think of this movie? Was it the best X-men movie yet? Was it your favorite comic book film? Let me know.

First Class starts off as its own movie but slowly turns into the studios want of a prequel, by the end, it's reeking of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Although Vaughn does a very good job of reviving the X-Men series, his dreams of a “more epic†sequel are dashed by his ending to this one. Though, you never know. - Hanley
