At best a curiousity - Eoghan Bolger
Starring Emily Browning and directed by Zack Snyder Sucker punch is an action film about a woman who is sent to a mental institution after attacking her abusive father. Once there she begins to explore a different world where a mysterious elderly man tells her that to escape she must find several items to do so.
The film is an hour and forty minutes long.
Looking at the trailer to this film alone warrants at least a curious viewing, the actors surprisingly looked like they were enjoying their roles rather than going through the motions. There is some creativity to the action sequences and the film is better than anything else I have watched by the director (Watchman was appalling and 300 was broken up by an intrusive and dull side plot.
The problems here are that, while anyone can spot much of whats going on is in the heads of the protagonists the movie isn't really dependable when it comes to dialogue leading to some confusion, vagueness and incoherence. Its also fairly disjointed as well and like man action fantasy films too often repeats itself and at times feels soulless. There is a certain interest toward the ridiculous nature of the action scenes but before long you realize this is just trying to hard.
The visual style is fairly annoying too and the overall direction and presentation makes it look like what is really just a mindless film give off an aura of depth that isn't actually there.
I never liked Snyder's musical choices in his films and it is equally irritating and pretentious here.
The fights here will probably be relatively outlandish to some older viewers but at the same time there are some aspects that will put off younger members of the audience. At least work out your viewership
For a while, before it fizzles out the action here is watchable and the acting is good but while the female lead is developed enough for a movie of this calibre nothing else really gets any attention .
I can accept a fanservish auctioneer which this has elements of and I would have been set to give it three stars but this one has such a flair of arrogance in its production.
Also for an almost two hour action movie, it takes up to twenty minutes for us to see anything that nature.
Especially as it goes on the movie gave me very little reason to actually give a damn .
Also is the message here women in strong roles or objectification?
