Love And Other Drugs
Not Typically Hollywood - scorpio6
How refreshing to go and see a Hollywood movie that is atypical of your common or garden rom-com,it's not cheesy, its not schmaltzy,it's quite realistic(even the sex looks real!) and there is genuine chemistry between the two leads.Add to this a good script, some thought-provoking moments and you have all the ingredients for a pretty damn fine movie.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays the loser son(Jamie) of high achieving parents and equally go get 'm siblings. His charm is abundant and when we encounter him first he is using it to sell televisions and stereos. He also uses it to have an encounter with the manager's girlfriend and is promptly sacked.
He becomes an employee of Pfizer and this being 1995,is there at the inception of Viagra. He becomes hugely successful.
In the course of flogging drugs,he encounters Maggie Murdoch,a feisty Parkinson's sufferer who is determined not to allow anyone get close to her.She loves sex and Jamie is happy to oblige. She pages him on his beeper and they perform,no strings,no questions,no Big Deal.
However after a night out,he returns home to her and realises that he is falling in love with her.
This is a lovely film with some interestingly observed pieces on the pharmaceutical industry and their absolute cynicism as well as a more conventional love story between two unconventional types.
