The Social Network

Classic Historical Epic - MicealJ

A friend of mine has had his Facebook account suspended for 72 hours on several occasions for posting offensive remarks. He has long since argued that there should be some sort of fire-wall or security clearance that prevents one from accessing one's homepage and extolling one's controversial opinions while one is out of one's face drunk! Given that according to “The Social Network” Mark Zuckerberg created the whole phenomenon by going on-line and posting obscene remarks about his recently ex-girlfriend – whilst drunk, that seems unlikely. This is just one of the slew of historical facts this film reveals about these major world-changing events that took place - seven years ago. Or at least got started. In 2003 director David Fincher was already well past “Seven” and “Fight Club” – actually even “Panic Room”; writer Aaron Sorkin was on his third or fourth series of “The West Wing” and Justin Timberlake was posting HIS obscene remarks about ex-girlfriend Britney via “Cry me a River”. Here Timberlake plays Sean Parker the inventor of 'Napster' who becomes a mentor to Zuckerberg, guiding him in his journey to Internet domination like a wise and experienced veteran of the chase. Parker is 31 – currently. That's the style of “The Social Network” – it deliberately presents the story as almost a period place. Everything here is clearly old-school, the mobile phones are so basic; headphones cover the ears rather than stick into them and the PCs use Windows XP for God's sake! Seven years ago there was no such thing as Facebook, today it's the biggest most successful web-site in the whole wide world, in October. The story is told in a similarly breathtakingly fast fashion right from the opening break-up scene which machine-guns the dialogue at you in a style that never lets up for the next two hours. It makes for a gripping story from something that you would surely never expect to fill even the trailer. The acting throughout is top-notch as well (including Timberlake) but Jesse Eisenberg's playing of Zuckerberg like a Vulcan with Aspergers is truly compelling. This is the man who in a couple of years became the world's youngest billionaire – but is he really happy?!
