Robin Hood
Next joint project - Tarzan? - Mick Jordan
There is an overwhelming feeling while watching Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe's latest epic collaboration of – “What?” and “Why?” and “But it's Robin Hood!” Surely it can't be that long since Kevin Costner's attempt came out (simultaneously with the now forgotten Patrick Bergin version – eh “Robin Hood”) plus there's been that God-awful BBC series that surely killed the legend once and for all. But no, here they are the men behind “Gladiator” clearly trying to recapture that film's glory, with a tough gritty story that sets out to bring a realistic portrayal of an oft-told tale– but it's Robin Hood! This is surely meant to be a silly swashbuckling nonsensical fairytale of laughter, adventure and romance. Not a grim, thought-provoking analysis of what made such a man turn from a heroic soldier of the crusades to the merciless unrelenting life of a wanted criminal forced to live in the harsh inhospitable forests of medieval England as he battles against impossible odds for justice and equality for all – it's Robin Hood!! Nevertheless Ridley Scott takes his subject very seriously and we are presented with an epic drama rather than an epic adventure. Typically he populates the film with a distinguished cast so much so that you find yourself going “Oh there's Danny Huston”; “There's William Hurt”; “There's Max Von Sydow”; “There's the really, really bad guy from 'Lost'” – “Hang on, where's Brendan Gleeson?” Plus of course, the film is book-ended by two epic battles which are exactly what you'd expect them to be. There's nothing much wrong with this film, it's brisk, it's entertaining. It's well acted and the effects are good – but and again but – it's Robin Hood!
