I'm not going to pretend to be a massive Alice in Wonderland fan - having never read Lewis Carroll's tale and possessing only a passing fondness for the Disney classic, this review is intended to offer a commentary of Tim Burton's remake on its merits as a standalone piece of cinema. In that regard, it may be difficult for fans to reconcile their own nostalgia-laden experience with the couple of hours i spent in the cinema wondering when exactly I'd be swept away by the expected charm and verve. Admittedly it's a feast for the eyes - everything is beautifully presented, and despite the array of colour it's still unmistakeably a Tim Burton film. This is a slight sticking point, though. While Burton's avid fans will doubtless revel in his idiosyncratic landscapes and quirky direction, it's hard to dismiss the feeling of déja vu that he brings to proceedings. From the identikit casting (Bonham Carter and Depp in harness, as per usual) to the dampened shading, you can't help but feel that you've seen it all before. There are no significantly creative plot devices there to distract from the nagging familiarity, and a lack of real urgency to drag the story along. The creature effects are all well executed, with the bandersnatch proving a highlight: unfortunately though, given the majesty of Avatar's fully-realised world just a few months ago, the snapshot of underland we're given still feels a bit twee and restrictive. It's not the sort of (relative) shortcoming you could hold against Alice in Wonderland though - indeed, there's very little that can actually be pointed at and identified as "wrong". It just fails to ignite at any point, trundling along at a leisurely pace and ticking the mandatory boxes but never exceeding or challenging expectations.
