District 9
Startlingly original Sci-fi - Patrick McLaren
For the first twenty minutes or so, Disrict 9 looked like an ill-judged sci-fi farce, with Sharlto Copley's bureaucrat, clipboard in hand, knocking on the doors of a series of dilapidated shacks and interviewing the prawn-like humanoids within. Then, following an encounter with one particular 'prawn', Copley's world changes forever and the movie takes off. There are many things to relish in District 9: the brilliant CGI which gives Avatar a run for its money, the superb script which makes the incredible seem real, a genuinely original plot, but most of all, an outstanding central performance from Sharlto Copley. Despite its many strengths, District 9 would have been a much poorer film without him. He is the everyman jobsworth, at first totally out of his depth, but who manages to find hidden reserves within himself when the chips are down. It is a performance of great subtlety and intelligence. And what an ending! Please let there be a sequel...
