well worth a rent! - Niall
I missed this when it was out in the cinema dunno how because it ticks all the right boxes, Aliens fighting explosions fighting and some more explosions! The film is set with the alien spaceship hovering over johannesburg.
I really liked the way it wasn't the normal alien takeover flick,they didn't land in new york or washington,they didn't threaten total human wipeout or take over and in actual fact they needed our help! Its set mostly as a documentary too which I thought was a great way to get lots of information about the storyline across without feeling too boged down.
It was a great twist on an alien film to see that they wern't the dominant species and needed the humans to set up a refugee camp for their survival, even though their weapons and technology are far superior to our own.
Sharlto Copley is great in the lead role and its great to see that the lead role went to a south african rather than Leo Di Caprio giving his hammy blood diamond accent again. Sharlto gets infected by the aliens(nicknamed prawns) and slowly starts to transform into one of their own. We see a change in him as he is made an outcast from humanity and has to partner up with the prawns he used to despise.
The film changes then into a sort of normal action sci-fi thriller which is a bit of a let down considering the clever storyline that brought us on the ride up to that point. I still thoroughly enjoyed it though and you can't help but root for sharlto and the rest of the prawns. There's some great action scenes a few laughs and maybe even a sequel. If there is i'll definately hit the cinema next time to see what Blompcamp comes up with!
