Up in the air could have been nothing more than a slightly above average indie film. However thanks to its sense of capturing the spirit of age and circumstance – in addition to being one of the first mainstream pieces of entertainment to consciously reflect the current recession- it has deservingly gained critically acclaimed status.
The film takes place mostly in anonymous 4 star hotel rooms, airport lounges and office blocks, all short-hand symbols for corporate America, and features familiar reference points and quirks such as characters googling and sending explicit instant messages to each other.
While Up in the Air does fit very much within the conventions of the American indie comedy - present and correct are the unsatisfied male lead, the free-thinking confident woman who makes a big impact on his life, the miss matched companionship of the idealistic youth and disillusioned sarcastic voice of experience with the return home to a supposedly depressing rural hometown that in fact turns out to be a welcoming close community.
However the film has enough unique direction to break out of what could have been a formulated ending, keeping you engaged while adding an indie soundtrack (Elliott Smith etc) to the mix! This film for me was like a breath of fresh air with Clooney engaging in the subtle but expertly placed comedy throughout.
