Pssst! Want something to make you laugh in these cold & depressing times…. Well I got this DVD for three quid on Amazon & already it's had two outings in the DVD player. Doctors say laughter is a great remedy for most aches & pains & begorrah they are right! It's quite a while since my laughing gear got so much exercise. This is definitely one to watch again as both Brendan (Will Ferrell) & Dale (John C. Reilly), are the best comedy combination I have seen in years. Their timing, presence, movement & sheer brilliance leaves me wanting more.... bring on Step Brothers 2. Just the idea of these two having to share the same room with bump-beds & are now related because Brendan's mother married Dale's father. From the moment Nancy (Mary Steenburgen) arrives at Robert & Dales house with Brendan sitting in the back of the car with a long sulky face on him I knew we were in for a treat. They play out their childishness & immaturity to perfection which gives us a laugh a minute throughout this masterpiece. Admittedly there are a few scenes here and there which will stop you letting the little ones see it & it takes a few risks along the way, but that is no harm, as at the end of the day the moviemakers are just trying to make us laugh. These guys don't work, can't make themselves a bread & butter sandwich & are spoiled rotten. At first they predictably hate each other & try to outdo each other with threatening to do something worse than the last one has threatened to do to the other one in the cutting off body parts department. All is well until Brendan's very successful brother Derek (Adam Scott) arrives on a visit with the missus & kids for dinner & to meet Robert for the first time, as he couldn't make the wedding because he was at a meeting... At dinner, Derek & Robert (a successful doctor) instantly hit it off & get into a name dropping contest. Dale tries to get into the conversation but is made to look silly & ends up going to his treehouse to sulk... followed by Brendan who doesn't get on with his brother. Later when Derek climbs up to talk to them & Dale does what he does (watch it)... we see the step brothers realise they have a lot in common & start to get on. If you are looking for a movie with a deep plot & full meaningful storyline, you won't find it here. They do insert a plot where their parents marriage becomes under strain because of the boys, who are made to realise they have to find work to survive in this life. I wasn't looking for any major twists or turns... I just wanted some laughs & I got plenty of them. Some people may find the whole thing ridiculously silly & others will find it hilarious... put me in the 'others' bracket...
Verdict: Gimme 5 lads!!!
