Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

No Last Crusade but great Indy flick. - simonconnolly

When Indiana Jones rode into the sunset with his father and close friends after finding the Holy Grail in The Last Crusade we all thought he was gone forever. It was the perfect end to one of the best film franchises ever made. And now it's back and for me it's more of the same. Set 19 years after The Last Crusade Indiana Jones is back, this time going head to head with The Soviets as they race to unlock the secret behind The Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls. Now I feel at this point I should mention what will make or break this film for you, the ending. This is a spoiler so if you are yet to see the films climax then stop reading. But your final opinion will rely on the ending, which is aliens. I can't say I'm surprised as Spielberg does have a fixation with space and extra-terrestrials but a lot of people thought it was too ridiculous and unbelievable. But if you are a true fan of Indiana Jones than this should not ruin the film for you, because when was it not completely absurd. In Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana found the Ark of Covenant and a load of Nazis melted. In the Last Crusade he found a couple thousand year old man who was guarding the Holy Grail. The endings were always completely ridiculous and elaborate and that's why we loved Indy, and that's why I still love Indy. And apart from one vine swinging, George of the Jungle style scene everything that came before the ending was just as great. It had the whip, the bad guys, the mystery and even a nuclear explosion. The only thing I didn't like was Spielberg's new favourite person Shia La Boeuf being groomed for an Indiana Jones spin-off thing, blatantly shown by his character Mutt picking up Indy's hat at the end of the film and planning on wearing it. But the film was still quite good and it was great seeing Indy again. The first scene was also great and even though it is generally hated the nuke scene was quite good for me too. Harrison Ford may be getting on a bit (not old at the Sylvester Stallone level but old nonetheless) but he shows he can still take care of the bad guys with ease. La Boeuf was for me dreadful. I really do not see what Spielberg seems to as he gives the same mediocre performance in every film I have seen him in this far. Cate Blanchett was a great addition to the film as the sword wielding Soviet Irina Spalko. Like every other woman in Indian Jones whether they are good or bad we feel sorry for them when they get in trouble, although her character reminded me a lot of Nazi soldier Elsa in The Last Crusade. They were both evil, both gained sympathy and both died at the end when the mystery or whatever was revealed. Steven Spielberg directed the film wonderfully, as usual. He is undeniably one of the best director sin Hollywood today and although his direction here is nowhere near as stunning as in his classics such as Schindlers List and Saving Private Ryan it is still very impressive. So all in all I thought this was a fairly successful return to the classic franchise, and I do think it should be an end to it. The last thing we need is another Rocky franchise with 70 year old Ford still playing Indy and whipping his way through danger. Also I truly hope a fifth instalment with Shia La Boeuf as Indy never ever happens. If you liked the three previous films and thought that their ending were completely ridiculous but brilliant than you should love this film. There are moments which really could've been excluded from the film but overall it's quite good. So basically diehard fans should be happy with this resurrection and I personally thought it was the second best indy film behind the Last Crusade. that being said I do honestly believe your opinion of the film will come down to how brilliant or stupid you think the films end is.
