A rom-com with Teeth and legs.. - Clars
I was surprised when I saw a 5 star review for a rom-com on this site - but since I've always had a little bit of a "thing" for Joseph GL since his 3rd Rock days it gave me another reason to get myself to the cinema. He doesn't disappoint, he was always a great actor and has even got better - obviously the interim years were used for honing his craft! But he isn't really stretched in this - he basically has to portray the character in 3 moods - yearning and horny to Happy and fulfilled yet strangely unsatisfied - to miserable, depressed and bitter. As the film is out of sequence (which is one of the most interesting aspects of this film) he appears to be adept at switching from one mood to the next – a well-worn device but one that is always interesting. Zooey Dechanel is a good actress and is quite watchable in this. What grates is the stereotype “kooky” girl that is portrayed as being irresistible – I've never understood that. Why does wearing vintage 50's clothes and being aloof and mysterious in an “adorable” way seem to mean that all men fall madly in love with that person? Because they don't! The story was very good, if a tad predictable, but it was the smaller touches that really made this film stand out. Such as the supporting cast – while one or two, were, again, clichéd (spunky little sister who's wise beyond her years, anyone?) most were portrayed in a funny and interesting manner that belied their brief screen time, in particular Toms best friend who's optimistic in a drunken and rather lecherous – he reminds me of that actor in “revenge of the nerds”, remember he was in Moonlighting and Risky Business too. And Tom's boss is really funny as the boss with a heart but no soul or imagination. All in all this film deserves 5 stars if you are just taking the rom-com area into account, but a rating within the overall world of celluloid merits 4 Starsin my book.
