Tired and Lazy Romcom - Lorraine
The Proposal tells the story of tightly wound publishing executive Margaret (Sandra Bullock) and her assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds). When Margaret learns that she is facing deportation to Canada she ropes Andrew into marrying her so that she can stay in the US, in exchange for enhancing his job prospects. They then have to break the news of their impending nuptials to Andrew's somewhat estranged family in Alaska and convince a suspicious immigration officer that they are a legitimate couple. If you've seen the trailer for The Proposal, then you've already seen all the best bits of the film. Despite being a fan of both Bullock and her co-star Reynolds, I found this romcom to be tired. There is a decided lack of chemistry between Reynolds and Bullock and Reynolds' character is surprisingly dislikeable. The Proposal feels like the type of film created by Hollywood executives adhering to some sort of chick flick checklist and the plot is a series of lazily linked set pieces. You can practically hear the moneymakers brainstorming: 'Sandra Bullock should fall out of a moving boat, it'll be hilarious!' Unfortunately, it isn't.
