Coraline 3D
Wonderfully Creepy - Lorraine
Directed by Harry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas) and based on the book by Neil Gaiman (Stardust), Coraline is a twisted little stop-motion movie. It tells the story of Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning), a young girl who moves into a mysterious new house. Bored by her neighbours and ignored by her workaholic parents (Teri Hatcher and John Hodgman), Coraline discovers a doorway to an alternate reality where her home is beautiful and her new button-eyed parents are loving and attentive. However she begins to suspect that there is more to her Other Mother than meets the eye and soon finds herself trapped in a nightmare version of her life. There are some genuinely scary moments in the film (for adults as well as kids!) and the soundtrack is wonderfully creepy. Teri Hatcher voices Coraline's mother surprisingly well but the talents of Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French are wasted in the roles of Coraline's neighbours Miss Spink and Miss Forcible. Speaking as someone who wasn't particularly a fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline is an enjoyable, though warped, kids' film.
