Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Fair - Eoghan Bolger
The teenage mutant ninja turtles are characters that barely need an introduction, these four popular anthromorphic ninjas have starred in three live action films, two cartoons, a television series, videogames, not to mention countless comics and figurines. Its been a varied experience so far now the popular characters that emptied our pockets and had us glued to our television sets are back in a new outing. The plot this time features the turtles fighting against a group of monsters who appear following Shredders death . First and foremost the film is automatically a significant improvement on the weaker third instalment of the movie series, however it is firmly behind and outshone by the first two turtles films, teenage mutant ninja turtles 1 in particular. The film disappoints by excluding Krang, bebop, rock steady, shredder and for that matter any trace of the familiar villains, Shredder was one of the defining features of the first two films. Teenage mutant ninja turtles four unfortunately due to the fact the aim of this movie was to appeal to a wider audience it does not emulate the comics darker, violent tone quite as well as some may of hoped( however it is present to a mild extent) , however it does have a faithful, slightly gritty visual style and boasts decent CG work. The voice over's are fair and the humour from the television series and cartoons is present in addition to some great fight scenes. There are far superior comic book adaptations out there but this is still worth a look, there's a lot here both who grew up with the show as well as younger children who may not have experienced the turtles before. The overall film however does not hold candle to most of the other turtles incarnations which may be a let down for the most devout fans. Not bad, but not great. Verdict : ***
