There's no getting around it- Observe and Report is a strange film. Writer/director Jody Hill has said that he wanted to make a funny version of Taxi Driver. With that bizarre idea in mind, people going to see Observe and Report should not expect the easy humour of recent comedies like 17 Again. The film is a departure for the usually amiable Seth Rogen in the role of Ronnie Barnhardt, an unhinged shopping mall security guard who becomes obsessed with catching a flasher who has been terrorizing women at the mall, including Brandi (Anna Faris), the trashy mall employee he's besotted with. Most of the laughs that Observe and Report elicits are of the uncomfortable kind, particularly during a fairly disturbing scene featuring a vomit-covered Faris in a clinch that you would never see in a movie like Superbad. For a lot of people, Observe and Report is going to be seen as a black comedy that doesn't really feature much comedy. Fans of Superbad, go see 17 Again instead.
