Shooter
Avoid - Mark
Resourceful hero is framed by all-powerful shadowy bad guys and must prove his innocence and/or avenge buddy, while avoid the regular forces of law and order. This is a decades old Hollywood formula that Hitchcock was doing long before most of us were born. The formula endures because it can work if given the required amount of plot detail, pacing and characterisation. Sadly, The Shooter has none of these attributes. The plot is by the numbers, the pace is slowed by needless exposition (Note to Mr Fugua: you don't have to explain things, we know the drill!) and most of the characters are cardboard cut-outs. The only interesting character is Nick Memphis the rookie FBI man (played by Michael Pena) but his character is little used with the main focus on the stereotypical characters of the special forces hero Swagger (Wahlberg) and the shifty baddie Johnson (Glover). Irritatingly, the dialogue is peppered with glib references to real political events without any theme to back them up. In truth, aside from a few witty one-liners there is little to recommend about this movie.
