While a lot of people constantly sing Will Smiths praises as an excellent leading man or top class actor... I don't see it. I am probably biased as I never liked any of his other efforts, so going to this was not my choice but I knew was going to see The Wrestler straight after this one, so this was like the B-Movie warm up before the main feature starts. I knew the jist of the story was that some tax inspector was going to do good deeds for seven people. Thoughts of the seven deadly sins being replayed before my eyes soon vanished when Will dials 911 & looks for an ambulance to attend to someones suicide.... his own. I said to myself... this could be one of those confusing flashback movies which I hate, unless good old Will does the quickest exit of a leading man of all time... the first minute. Damn! I was right with the first guess... flashbacks... now I know I wont like it one iota. Anyway I endured the torture for all two hours of predictability & plot holes like no other. It just didn't make sence to me, even giving it my full attention as a mate had told me to, as I could miss the main plot. Not the one with the big signpost above it at the start, but once he gets himself in that hospital & meets a few people, he certainly lets the cat out of the bag once & for all. Smith plays a man with a troubled past & becoming a do-gooder will help him get some peace of mind and ease the hurt he feels every day. He is haunted by an incident that happened a couple of years previously & the director uses flashbacks in intervals to reveal a bit more each time of what is troubling poor Will. The flashbacks are confusing as some are difficult to separate from modern day & that didn't help the situation for the viewer. His love interest is in the shape of Emily (Rosario Dawson). She owes some tax but it is through illness (weak heart) that she has fallen behind in payments. Will arranges a freeze on payments & proceeds to walk her dog, chauffeur her around, go for picnics... he even manages to fix a machine for her with a packet of screwdrivers from the pound shop! He doesn't want to fall in love & is even reluctant to kiss her. He won't answer questions about himself & gets angry when pressed on it... WHY? Some people were moved by this movie... I was moved to.... right out to the last seat in the row so I could get out rather sharpish & get to see The Wrestler. As you might have guessed (if you are still reading this) I didn't think much of this movie. It will make lots of money because of who is in it & a lot of women will shed some tears as it is a weepie. I just found it all one dimensional & predictable so not one for my DVD collection.
