Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I Really Wanted It To Be Good But It Was Crap - HSP

Waited to see this for a long time, ever since I heard they were dusting down the whip & setting off on a new adventure. Saw it in the cinema in all it's glory & thought it was crap, but I decided to give it another gander to see if I missed something. However, like so many other movies that are revived & thrown back into the spotlight years later, this one was for me... a big let down. After watching it again I was saying to myself... "Is that it?... What was that all about?". It is not a total flop, Harrison Ford gives it a go but it didn't look like he really & truly wanted to do this all over again. The overall plot seemed to be borrowed from the awful National Treasure, with riddles & cryptic maps thrown in every now & then to add to the confusion. Cate Blanchett (who I usually like in movies) plays the baddie, Russian Irina Spalko but that accent was so annoying. At home I have 4 uses for the mute button on my TV remote control, 1. The Angelus, 2. Harvey Norman adverts 3. David Beckham interviews, 4 Expose' on TV3 (Why do TV3 make it look like we have a piece of jigsaw stuck to my TV screen?). Now I have found a fifth reason to use it... Blanchette's accent. It starts off straight into the action with the Russians dressed as American soldiers firing a few bullets & taking over Area 51 in the desert. Yeah just a few lads on the gate defending the place where the Yanks keep all their big secrets. Jones is already their captive & once they get inside the big warehouse Spalko wants him to locate some sort of relic. He duly obliges but manages to find a whip so decides to escape & so the adventure kicks off. His sidekick in this one is the aptly named Mutt Williams (Shia LeBeouf) who we first see on a motorcycle heading down a railway platform doing his Marlon Brando impression. This lad is being groomed to take over in the next few installments of the Indiana Jones money making scheme, well I for one won't be in any hurry to see them if his performance here is anything to go on. It does have some funny moments along the way but I felt flat from early on & my faith in Spielberg never really recovered. We see Ford struggling to be rescued from quicksand & the instant he is pulled out there is not even a grain of sand on his trousers. John Hurt, Ray Winstone & Jim Broadbent also feature here. Hurts character {Professor Oxley) was very similiar to the one he played in "The Field" Bird O'Donnell. A bit of an oddball but not really that stupid behind it all. As the unconvincing plot came to its final minutes I stuck around to see what they did with the skull. The ending just didn't make sence to me just the predictability of being in a cave setting with walls & everything else collapsing all around but the good guys always managing to get out unscathed. The sound effects & cinematography were brill, the CGI worked most of the time, the acting was so so but the plot was just non existant. However there is plenty of action scenes throughout as any Indiana flick will provide but I was disappointed that this is all they could come up with after having 19 years to write it!
