Yes Man Peyton Reed directs this comedy/romance film starring Jim Carrey in the leas role. It is based on the story by Danny Wallace. The plot focuses on a young man who has lost his wife and finds himself unable to say yes , he is socially withdrawn , always making excuses and refusing people. When an old friend shows up he encourages him to be more open and to attend a gathering dedicated to saying the word yes. Eventually the lead character finds himself unable to stop saying the word Yes to everything and becomes more outgoing , with mixed results. Yes man is a rarity amongst American comedies, this one is actually pretty funny and is more sophisticated and consistent in its humour , the script is better written and features smarter dialogue too with hardly a penis , fart joke in sight. Romantic , drama elements are also featured/implemented successfully and are handled just as well as the comedic aspects. The main character is interesting , likeable , amusing and well developed and part of the appeal is Carrey's excellent acting , throughout the film he shows us his skills and diversity jumping between funny man antics and a more serious approach. The film doesn't ever feel boring or suffer from running on one joke either . All of the actors did a fine job but it was Carrey that definitely stole the show. Perhaps this may be even his best film. For the observant viewer , the film features many pop culture references (Pokemon , GI Joe , 300 , Interview with the vampire some showing up as dvds in a video shop), the most obvious (and amusing) being the hilarious stab at the Harry Potter franchise. I highly recommend this film not just to fans of Carrey but the casual audience , even his critics as well because he certainly proves the doubters wrong here. If you , like I have become frustrated with how some comedies have been lately , this refreshing film would be ideal for you. Go see it , if only for Carrey's performance. Verdict: ****
