Depeche Mode - Sounds of The Universe
Not so sure about the rating - DM Fan
While certainly not their best album, it's also not their worst. And much much better than a 3 out of 5 rating. The retro sound was very much intentional. It's been reported at the beginning of the recording session that Martin Gore purchased many older keyboards and synths off Ebay (and other places online) just to get that classic and 80's sound. Which they accomplished in spades. And yet, it sound fresh. Also, DM said there were no clear single choices on this album. But I disagree. "Wrong", the first single, is pure "Violator" era classic Depeche. I could also see "Peace" and "Perfect" getting released as singles too. The former sounding like the love child of OMD and the Human League. Even where Dave sounds like Phil Oakley in parts. And on the latter, he sounds a bit like Simon Le Bon. In short, while the album doesn't have obvious single choices, the production and vocals are superb. And I'm very very happy with the end result. Well done guys!

it's not their worst - Fercab
I can not give this new album a low rating, but that's because i'm a hard core devotee. I agree, this album is not their best, but it's not their worst either. At least I'm relieved it's better than... MORE
