I would usually never go for this kind of 'predictable happy ending' film but found myself at a loose end yesterday and decided I would try Penelope. What I found was a lovely story of a young girl who grew up on her own due to her disfigured face. Her overly protective and horribly pushy mother is trying to find a 'blue blooded man' to marry Penelope so her the curse of her piglike face will disappear. Cue Penelope meeting many a rich handsome man who once they see her face run a mile, even out through windows! I won't spoil it but as i said it isn't the most surprising end but does have a few twists to keep you wondering. Christina Ricci and James McAvoy are very good...I would say keep an eye on James McAvoy....anyone who has seen him in 'Last King Of Scotland' will know what I mean. Also, I came out of this film very pensive and it really evokes thoughts of 'appreciate what you have'...etc. I would recommend it even if you are like me and don't think it's your kind of film. As the saying goes ' Don't judge a book by its cover'.
