Major blockbusters like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will always attract fan theories and rumours.

It's easy to see why - film studios are pretty adept are generating buzz around a film by placing certain nods and winks in early promotional material, such as a trailer, that could hint towards people have suspected for quite a while.

Case in point is that very noticeable, lingering shot of Robin's armour in the Batman V Superman trailer. Sprayed across the armour is "HA HA HA JOKE'S ON YOU BATMAN", which we're pretty sure was down by the Joker.

If you don't want to know anything about fan theories or spoilers, best look away now...

Still here? Right, here we go. The latest fan theory suggests that, in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Robin is revealed to be none other than The Joker. That's right. Robin is the Joker. The theory suggests that Robin is captured by the real Joker, is tortured and brainwashed and decides to become The Joker after Batman kills him.

It's not just the spray-painted armour in the trailer, mind. In the Suicide Squad trailer and promo images for it, you'll notice that The Joker has a small 'J' tattooed on the right cheek. Anyone who's played the Arkham Knight videogame will know that when the Arkham Knight is revealed to be Jason Todd, who was Robin after Dick Grayson, he was branded with a 'J' mark on his face.

There's more. Another tattoo can be seen on Jared Leto's Joker of a winged creature - not unlike, say, a ROBIN? Yeah. Exactly.

Another, non-plot related rumour circulating is that director Zack Snyder's 18-year old son, Eli, will play a younger Robin, in flashback. That's been officially debunked by Snyder in a recent interview where he flat-out denied this was the case. He did, however, make an interesting point about said rumours that's quite telling.

"There are so many [rumors], it’s insanity. It’s funny because every now and then someone will touch on something that’s kind of true, but the next thing they say makes me realize that they took a wild guess. They’ll say something and I’ll say “Oh snap, they must have seen the script.” And then they’ll say, “And this happens!” And then I’ll go, They have no idea what they’re talking about."

So, thoughts? Most likely SOME of those rumours circulating regarding Robin are true. Snyder's known for being reverential to the source material - up to a point. We all know how we switched out the ending in Watchmen, but kept in tons of nods and references throughout. Moreover, Snyder seems to have a pretty firm grip on what he wants Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice to look and feel like.
