Tom Cruise has been on a press tour for his latest blockbuster, The Mummy, for a while now but it feels like the movie he's been talking about the most in the past few weeks is the Top Gun sequel.

It was just over a week ago that Cruise broke the news that Top Gun 2 was definitely happening with filming expected to begin within the year. Mere days later it was revealed that Cruise's Oblivion director, Joseph Kosinski, had gotten the gig to helm the sequel and even Val Kilmer weighed in by letting the world know that he was ready should he be called upon.

Now, in an interview that was published today with Access Hollywood, Cruise revealed what the sequel's title will be called.

Top Gun: Maverick

"You don't want a number" Cruise joked, ignoring the fact that he's currently filming a project currently titled M:I 6 - Mission Impossible.

Cruise also revealed that the sequel will have the same tone as the original and be very similar stylistically. Plot wise, the film is said to follow fighter pilots grappling with new drone technologies that are making their old style of flying obsolete.

The film doesn't have a release date bus is expected to begin production within the year.
