Look, we don't care what you think - Nicolas Cage is a decent actor who's got a problem with picking crap films.

Nevertheless, when he's good, he's really good. Look at last year's Joe or Bad Lieutenant and it'll tell you that despite working on some truly god-awful schlock, there's still a talented actor who occasionally slums it for a few quid.

The Runner, which is based in part on the BP Oil Spill, sees Cage as an idealistic politician who sets out to fight the spill and restore Louisiana to its former greatness.

However, as you'd expect with these things, he's soon caught in a corruption / sex scandal that sees him brought low in front of the media and his constituents.

As you can see, there's a pretty impressive cast that includes Connie Nielsen, Peter Fonda, Bunk from The Wire and Sal Maroni from Mad Men.

Not only that, we didn't see one single laser or cheesy one-liner so already it's ahead of Cage's usual work.

There's no word yet on an Irish release, but expect to see this on US Netflix in a few months as these indie titles normally do a day-and-date release on VOD.

What do you think? Does Cage deserve another shot? Let us know in the comments!
