Mel Gibson's a name that's been synonymous with controversy in recent years.

Although he's attempted to stage a comeback via acting, it hasn't really landed him anything particularly juicy - other than a stint as the villain in The Expendables 3. However, his directing credentials have always been exemplary, as both The Passion Of The Christ and Apocalypto made for some fascinating films. Braveheart, meanwhile, revitalised the idea of historical epics.

So it goes that Mel Gibson's going back to the historical epic well with Hacksaw Ridge, a World War II piece with Andrew Garfield as the first Conscientious Objector in history be awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military award in the US Armed Forces.

Take a look.

It's clear that Gibson is aiming towards the Oscars, both with its material and its release date - November being bang-smack in the middle of  award season. It's hard to say what kind of impact Hacksaw Ridge will have on the race and whether or not Mel Gibson will be welcomed back into mainstream Hollywood on the back of this.

At the very least, it looks like an interesting story and the cast of characters - Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn and Teresa Palmer - look like they're capable of working together.

Hacksaw Ridge is slated for a November 4th US release, however no Irish release date has been confirmed.
