Tom Hardy really does seem to enjoy playing truly extreme roles in his career.

The Revenant saw him in extreme conditions out in the wilderness of Alaska, The Dark Knight Rises saw him build up an incredible amount of strength and muscles to convincingly play Bane and Nicolas Winding Refn's biopic about Michael 'Bronson' Peterson saw him, likewise, play a real-life murderer and violent psychopath.

As we reported, Hardy's already on to play Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton and is now lining up another biopic - that of Al Capone's final days in Alcatraz Prison. Fonzo will focus on Capone's dementia and failing health, "and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life."

What makes this all the more interesting is that Josh Trank will be directing and writing the screenplay. For those who don't know, Trank was in charge of the ill-fated Fantastic Four reboot that's currently sitting at just 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and was the subject of intense scrutiny over on-set struggles.

Almost a year after one of the biggest flops in recent film history, Trank is now working with a marquee actor on a potentially hot property. Maybe people realised that it actually wasn't Trank's fault that Fantastic Four sucked. We said as much in our review, so maybe the true story of what happened will finally emerge.

No release date has been set for Fonzo, but it's expected for a 2018 release.
