It’s May the Fourth, which means Star Wars is on the mind of one and all.
To mark the occasion we’re looking at the most popular Star Wars movies worldwide. The survey was taken by howtowatch.com which looked at Google Trends data from the past year to see which films came out on top in 60 countries across the globe. The report includes only the countries that had sufficient search data to indicate a strong interest in one of the Star Wars films.
All nine Star Wars movies which have been released to date were considered. Surprisingly, the prequels were more searched for than the original trilogy. The movie that came out on top was Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Could this have something to do with the fact that another Star Wars story, Solo, hits cinemas this month?
The most searched for movie in Ireland was Episode 1 – the Phantom Menace. The movie was also the most searched for film in Australia, Austria, Greece, Israel (where its star, Natalie Portman, hails from) and South Korea. Croatia, Puerto Rico, Serbia and the UK prefer Episode 2 – Attack of the Clones.
Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith was the most popular Star Wars movie in Bulgaria, Czechia, France, Hungary, Poland and Romania.
14 countries loved Rogue One while the next highest, unsurprisingly, was A New Hope, which was the favourite of 13 countries. Next came 2015’s The Force Awakens, which 10 countries selected as its favourite.
4 counties backed The Empire Strikes Back while 3 countries (including the USA) rooted for the latest in the Star Wars canon, The Last Jedi. Return of the Jedi was snubbed with no country rating it the highest.
