Tom Cruise got Top Gun fans every where excited earlier this week when he confirmed that he was ready to go back to the Danger Zone and a sequel will go into production soon.

Doing a sequel to a beloved classic over 30 years after the original is inherently risky. But if you've got the right man calling the shots behind the camera then you might just pull it off.

Thus Cruise is turning to someone he trusts to help shepherd the project over the line. At least that's according to Variety anyways. They're reporting that Joseph Kosinski is the front runner for the gig.

The pair of course worked together on 2013's underrated Oblivion and Kosinski made his name prior to that with Tron: Legacy. Kosinski's next project according to IMDB is firefighter drama Granite Mountain and that's due to be released later this year so his schedule should be clear to start work on the Top Gun sequel once Cruise wraps on Mission Impossible 6
