Despite being the year that saw Disney set an industry record for worldwide ticket sales, 2016 is probably going to be best remembered for the box office flops.

The Hollywood Reporter has compiled its list of the biggest box office bombs from 2016 and it features big budget remakes, sequels, and biopics.

The year saw heavyweight directors (Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee) and A list stars (Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt) alike, humbled at the box office and raises serious question marks over their money making potential going forward.

Steven Spielberg and Roald Dahl might have sounded like a match made in heaven to studio execs but audiences stayed away, with The BFG only grossing $178m worldwide. A very poor return considering the film's budget was $140m and was backed with a hefty marketing spend.

It looks like 2016 might also be the year that audiences fell out of love with Johnny Depp. His troubles in his private life will not have been helped by the fact that Alice Through The Looking Glass lost more than $70m. Late last year, Depp was named by Forbes as the most overpaid star for the second year in a row. With the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise due next year, Depp badly needs to turn his fortunes around.

The main interest, from an Irish point of view is that Michael Fassbender's video game adaptation, Assassin's Creed, has made the list. The video game adaptation, which also features Brendan Gleeson, opened to a mere $14.9m over the Christmas period and THR's box office analysts are predicting it could loses between 75 and 100 million dollars.

Considering X-Men: Apocalypse and The Light Between Oceans also underperformed at the box office, Fassbender also needs a hit next year. Here's hoping Alien: Covenant can do the trick.
