It's been in discussions for a long time, but finally seems likely that a sequel (to the American remake) of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo could be happening.

Alicia Vikander, who is starting to really take off after strong work in Ex Machina and the upcoming The Danish Girl, is reportedly being lined up to replace Rooney Mara, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in that film. Sony Pictures are reportedly also looking for a new male lead, with Daniel Craig set to be replaced.

The first film was directed by David Fincher and he doesn't make them cheap; while the film did solid box office globally, it wasn't enough to have an instant green light from the studio. But they invested in the rights, so obviously want to continue with the series.

If the film does happen, it will be an adaptation of The Girl In The Spider’s Web, the one book in the series not penned by Stieg Larsson, who has passed away.

Steve Zaillian will adapt the script, and Sony have paid seven figures for him to do so. No word on a director as of yet; they could very well be chasing Fincher. However unlikely his involvement is.
