Sex scenes are, by and large, awkward for actors and directors alike.

It's taking something intensely intimate and turning it into a day at the office, not to mention the fact that it's going to caught on camera for all to see. It's supposed to be this sensuous thing, but the reality is that they're probably freezing and not very much into it in the slightest. However, with the upcoming drama On Chesil Beach, it's supposed to be awkward.

As Saoirse Ronan described in detail to Ryan Tubridy on his radio show this morning, the sex scenes "had to become so technical and each move had to be discussed beforehand because it is so awkward - and we needed to make it as awkward as possible." What's more, the scenes themselves took over a week to shoot - purely based on the choreography and how awkward it was designed to be.

"I remember when Girls came out, Lena Dunham's show, the sex scenes in that are great, but they're messy and real and awkward and nobody looks good in them so it's really refreshing to be part of a story where there's a bit of reality to that part of a relationship," explained Ronan.

On Chesil Beach is on release from this Friday.
