When The Matrix first arrived on our screens back in 1999, it was nothing short of revolutionary.

It wasn't just the cutting-edge effects employed by the Wachowskis, it also had an engaging story with an unusual array of characters. One such character was Switch, played by Belinda McCrory. Switch was one of the original crew of Morpheus' ship, the Nebuchadnezzar, and met a particularly grim end during the film.

However, during the casting process, it's been revealed that the character was originally supposed to be trans. According to a post on The Matrix's own subreddit - yes, it has one - the character of Switch was supposed to be played by a man in the "real" world and a woman in The Matrix. That's also the reason behind the character's name, Switch.

The Wachowskis are both trans, with Lilly - formerly Andy Wachowski - recently announcing herself as female. Lana - formerly Larry Wachowski - came out as female back in 2012. Not only that, Sense8 prominently featured a trans character and the process of transitioning has always informed their work.

It's a shame that Warner Bros. didn't go along with the original idea for Switch, as it's pretty ingenious and fits the narrative of The Matrix and about being your true self.
