As we've opined previously, videogame adaptations have never worked and will never for a multitude of reasons.

In more recent years however, videogames have tried to blur the lines between them and film - and have specifically taken influence and inspiration from them. Call Of Duty took huge nods from Ridley Scott's war epic, Black Hawk Down; to the point that they hired Hans Zimmer to score the game and he basically rehashed his soundtrack from the film.

Variety is now reporting that Italian director Stefano Sollima, who directed 2015's Suburra and the TV series that followed, Gomorrah, as well as the upcoming sequel to Sicario, is being lined up to helm an adaptation of Call Of Duty. On top of that, it'll have a screenplay from Kieran Fitzgerald - who previously worked on Oliver Stone's Snowden biopic and is supposedly working on a screenplay for the third Sherlock Holmes.

Activision Blizzard, the studio behind Call Of Duty, are keen to get more films based on their properties into production and are keen to turn their whole brand into something resembling Marvel or DC. Whether it works or not remains to be seen, but roping in someone like Sollima and Fitzgerald is a pretty strong statement of intent.
