After the critical pummeling received, it's little wonder that The Great Wall is now on track to become one of the biggest flops of the 2017 box office.

With a Rotten Tomato rating of 35% (we gave it two out of five, incidentally) and the spectre of whitewashing hanging over it, The Great Wall was always going to struggle at the box office - especially when it's wedged between Christmas season holdovers and Oscar season favourites.

However, a report by THR has it that The Great Wall will end up losing $75 million overall, tallied against a production budget of $150 million and a global marketing budget estimated at over $80 million. All told, The Great Wall earned just under $171 million at the Chinese box office - its largest single territory earning - and only managed to take in $37.2 million at the US box office.

However, the financial blow has been softened somewhat for Universal - who only had to cough up 25% of the total production budget, but did have to cover the global marketing budget - but it's now likely that US-Sino co-productions by other major studios will either be curtailed or cancelled.
