Most costume design awards - be they Oscars, BAFTAs, whatever - go to the kind of films that are intricately detailed and in a specific period.

The likes of Joe Wright's Pride And Prejudice all have a very specific take on costuming because, well, it's a period drama.

However, there's been so many other examples - particularly in the extremely niche area of men's jackets - that have been overlooked. Granted, a lot of what makes them so cool is who precisely is wearing them, but they're still worth noting.

Here's our pick of the ten best men's jackets and coats in movie history.

10. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - Bane's leather / sheepskin coat

Although you could argue Bane's mask was the most iconic part of his costume, there's definitely a case for his long coat. Costumer designer Lindy Hemming based its design on a Swedish Army coat and that of a frock coat used in the French Revolution. Deep fans of The Dark Knight trilogy will know that The Dark Knight Rises was essentially a retelling of Charles Dickens' A Tale Of Two Cities with Gotham City essentially turned into Paris during the Reign of Terror - so it makes sense that there's this kind of influence.

9. BLADE RUNNER 2049 - K's leather trenchcoat

Clearly an homage to Harrison Ford's jacket in the original, K's leather coat has been hailed by fashion periodicals such as Esquire as the "real star" of Blade Runner 2049. It's got that functional, weather-worn look and Ryan Gosling could make a black bag look cool as shit. The odd part? It isn't actually shearling or leather. According to costume designer Renee April, the jacket is made of cotton, laminated and weather-proofed to make it look that way - the same way the replicants are designed to look human. COSTUME DESIGN INFORMING OVERALL THEMES, PEOPLE.

8. THE THING - MacReady's bomber jacket

Kurt Russell's worn a lot of cool jackets down through the years - Snake Plissken's trenchcoat thing in Escape From L.A., the brown leather thing in Escape From New York, that gigantic fur thing in The Hateful Eight - however, they all fade in comparison to the bomber jacket he wore in The Thing. Maybe it's the beard and huge head of hair, but the whole look just screams, "I'm frozen and I don't care and this thing is warm."

7. BACK TO THE FUTURE II - The size-changing jacket

Look, the colours are awful and so on, but who didn't want the size-changing jacket as a kid? It was the same with the lace-up runners, everybody wanted one. More specifically, why did the jacket fit Marty McFly but not his son? And how did his son look identical to him? So many plot-holes in that film, when you think about it.

6. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK - Indy's leather jacket

Like the wide-brimmed hat, the bull-whip and the permanent film of sweat, the leather jacket is key to Indiana Jones' look. It's so weather-beaten, so clearly been thrown around and scraped off things that it's just like its owner.

5. TAXI DRIVER - Travis Bickle's army jacket

When you look at Taxi Driver, everything about has such a live-in, used-up feeling. Bickle's dingy apartment and the wiry way in which he skulks through the film at the beginning; it all adds up to that sense of reality in the film. Bickle's army jacket, worn in his days a soldier in Vietnam, is only seen when he commits himself to becoming more violent and it becomes a plot device when he fashions a sleeve gun and hides it in his jacket.

4. EASY RIDER - Captain America's leather jacket

Like James Dean's jacket in Easy Rider or Ryan Gosling's jacket in Drive, Peter Fonda's jacket in Easy Rider is a part of popular culture. It's nothing too fancy or intricate, but what it stands for and the idea of seeing an American flag emblazoned on the back of a drug-addled, free-spirited motorcyclist in '60s America was nothing short of controversial.

3. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - Han's Hoth coat

Believe it or not, there's been a 30-year debate going on with Star Wars fans over whether or not Han's coat on Hoth is brown or blue. Some say it's brown, but that the freezing temperatures in Norway had an effect on the celluloid film and changed the colouring of everyone's costume on screen. Others say that it's blue and, well, you can see that it's blue. Yeah, it's a thing. Look it up.

2. DRIVE - Driver's white scorpion jacket

Almost every scene in Drive just oozes effortless cool. Whether it's the captivating synth soundtrack by Cliff Martinez, the gorgeous cinematography by Newton Thomas Sigel, it all looks clearly constructed and elegant. Ryan Gosling's brilliant-white jacket, which becomes progressively blood-stained as the film continues, is now almost as iconic as...

1. REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE - The red Baracuta jacket

Shortly after James Dean completed work on Rebel Without A Cause, he specifically kept the jacket his character wore and refused to return it to the costume department. The costume designer, Moss Mabry, cut and sewed the jacket personally and its since gone on to become an iconic look. You can't wear a red jacket and a white t-shirt without immediately pairing it with James Dean and Rebel Without A Cause.
