10 Cloverfield Lane's success as a sort-of-but-not-really-direct sequel to Cloverfield has meant that, well, this sorta thing is now going to be more common.

Case in point, the JJ Abrams-produced sci-fi horror film that stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and our own Chris O'Dowd - Particle, previously known as God Particle - is actually going to be a sort-of-but-not-really-direct sequel to 10 Cloverfield Lane and Cloverfield. In fact, a report by The Wrap has it that Abrams is planning a shared universe - a Clover-verse (we're coining it, it's ours, calling it) - that will see a new film released annually.

Particle, which also stars David Oyelowo, Ziyi Zhang, Daniel Bruhl and Elizabeth Debiciki, was originally described as a sci-fi horror about a group of astronauts stranded on a space station who have to fight for survival as their reality is being altered. How it fits into 10 Cloverfield Lane and Cloverfield is anybody's guess, but there's obviously some sort of connection via the whole aliens thing.

Either way, it's a pretty interesting way of making films; completely under the radar with a diverse cast and young directors and a decent budget to back it all up.

Particle is slated for a February 2017 release.
