The actress, who for so many will always be the original Lois Lane, has sadly passed away.

Margot Kidder died today in her Montana home, according to the spokesperson at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston, MT.

The cause of death is not yet known

Margot starred alongside Christopher Reeve in the 1970s/80s Superman movies as well as as Kathy Lutz in horror film The Amityville Horror. She was working as an actress right up to her death with stage roles including The Vagina Monologues on Broadway.

The actress battled with bipolar disorder for years and ended up briefly homeless due to the illness in 1996. Since then she has become an advocate for mental health.

Margot has been married three times but split from her last husband French film director Philippe de Broca in 1984.

She is survived by her daughter Maggie and two grandchildren.
