There was much sadness in May when it was announced that Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in the 'Superman' film series, had passed away.

Kidder was 69 when she died on May 13th and although her manager said at the time that she had been found by a friend at her home and 'died peacefully in her sleep', it has now been revealed that she took her own life.

Park County coroner Richard Wood released a statement yesterday that said that Kidder "died as a result of a self-inflicted drug and alcohol overdose" and that no further details would be released.

Her daughter Maggie McGuane told AP that she knew that her mother had died by suicide 'the moment authorities took her to Kidder’s home in Livingston, a small town near Yellowstone National Park.'

"It’s a big relief that the truth is out there," she said. "It’s important to be open and honest so there’s not a cloud of shame in dealing with this."

She added, referring to the high suicide rate in Montana, "It’s a very unique sort of grief and pain. Knowing how many families in this state go through this, I wish that I could reach out to each one of them."
