After the complete and utter s**t-show that was Suicide Squad, it's hard to imagine any director who'd be willing to get to grips with its sequel and turn it around.

As we previously reported, Mel Gibson was apparently being considered for the role, whilst other names included Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer and original writer / director David Ayer were also mentioned.

However, a report in Deadline today says that Jaume Collet-Serra is now being courted for the director's chair. Collet-Serra is primarily known for Orphan, a 2009 horror film that was a commercial hit and a critical failure for Warner Bros. Collet-Serra also directed the laughably bad remake of House Of Wax, with Paris Hilton, and Goal II: Living The Dream, featuring the acting talents of the '06 Real Madrid football team.

Deadline's sources also say that both Margot Robbie and Will Smith are back on board, and that the script is currently being written by Adam Cozad, who also wrote The Legend Of Tarzan and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

So, thoughts? To be honest, Jaume Collet-Serra is the perfect choice to direct Suicide Squad 2. There's no way that anyone - outside of the hardcore DCEU fans - are going to actually enjoy it, and it's really now just about making these films halfway decent. Considering Jaume Collet-Serra's very mediocre filmography, he's a safe pair of hands who can't drive it off the road in the way that David Ayer can.

It'd have to be some kind of a miracle to make Suicide Squad 2 actually good, so it's really just about making it serviceable enough to get them into cinemas without it costing a small fortune in reshoots.
