The creator of Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Captain Atom - Steve Ditko - has passed away at the age of 90.

One of the most celebrated comic-book artists of the 20th century, Ditko was instrumental in defining the look of Spider-Man that would go on to define the character for over 50 years, beginning with The Amazing Spider-Man in 1963. Since then, the comic-book series has been in print for over four decades.

Ditko was also one of the key creators of Doctor Strange and its vibrant, psychedelic visuals helped to broaden and expand the comic's appeal beyond teenagers into the counter-culture movement of the '60s and '70s.

Ditko was also involved with the creation and artwork for comic-books such as The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four. Directors such as Edgar Wright and James Gunn offered condolences on Twitter when the news became public.
