Steve Carrell's career post-Office has been an interesting one, to say the least.

Many expected him to scoop up an Oscar for his haunting performance as John E. DuPont in the biopic-cum-psychological thriller Foxcatcher, but it wasn't to be. He's also turned up in some really affected indie comedies, such as Dan In Real Life and The Way, Way Back.

His most recognisable role, however, would be as Gru in Despicable Me and its sequels - all of which became huge hits. Now it seems he's about to get involved with another animation franchise as Variety reports Carrell is in final negotiations to star in a film about Minecraft.

For those that don't know, Minecraft is a massively popular videogame where you... well, build. Think Lego but without the physical building blocks. Anyway, Carell's in talks to star but what's even more interesting is who's going to write and direct the Minecraft movie. That task falls to It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's Rob McElhenney.

Yes, Mac is going to write and direct a film about a videogame. Incredible stuff.

No release date has been set for the Minecraft Movie, but given the unbridled success of Lego Movie for Warner Bros., it seems likely that it'll be fast-tracked pretty quickly once everyone's signed up and ready to go.
