Disney and Lucasfilm won’t enjoy reading the projected numbers for its second weekend.

According to early estimates in Variety, director Ron Howard’s ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ is set to make a paltry $28 million in North America this weekend, which is a 67% decrease from last week. This was despite decent reviews (read ours here) and a huge marketing budget.

If you thought that the director might be stressing out about these underwhelming figures, well you’d be wrong. He hasn’t lost his sense of humour as we reported earlier this week.

The lack of success for ‘Solo’ may be explained, in part, by its release date which came just five months after ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’. Disney’s gamble in releasing two ‘Star War’ titles in such a short space of time hasn’t paid off. To put it in perspective, fellow standalone pic ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ pulled in $64 million in its second weekend.

‘Solo’ follows a young Han Solo played by Alden Ehrenreich who encounters gambler Lando Calrissian, played by Donald Glover.

Disney are currently in pre-production on J.J Abrams ‘Star Wars: Episode XI’ which is set to be released in December 2019.

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ is in cinemas now.
