After premiering at Telluride, Saoirse Ronan’s new film Lady Bird earned Oscar buzz for the actress and widespread acclaim for its director Greta Gerwig (this being the directorial debut of the Frances Ha star). Now the movie is proving to be a success in the box office as well as with critics.

Lady Bird just accomplished the best limited opening of the year. It made $375,612 across a mere four screens in Los Angeles and New York, generating an impressive $93,903 average per screen.

A24, who are distributing the film, said on Sunday that the title “sold-out shows at all four opening theatres this weekend… The surefire awards contender boasts a perfect 100% on RT and features a fantastic ensemble, led by the incomparable Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf.

“Exit polling shows sensational word-of-mouth and universal appeal from both younger and older audiences across the board.” A24 plans to expand into top markets next weekend and across America over Thanksgiving. Lady Bird is currently set for an Irish release in February 2018.

Previously, Amazon Studios/Lionsgate’s The Big Sick had 2017’s highest opening weekend. When it opened in five theatres in late June, it grossed $421,577, giving it a theatre average at $84,315, in its debut.

Set in Sacramento, Lady Bird follows Ronan’s character Christine, aka Lady Bird, who is eager to get out of California and start college life.
