Expectations couldn’t be higher for Saoirse Ronan’s coming-of-age dramedy Lady Bird which has been (totally deservedly by the way – because we have seen it and it is magnificent) heaped with festival accolades, love from audiences, and praise from critics.

Aside from one critic that is.

Lady Bird was the best-reviewed film in Rotten Tomatoes history (taking the position from Toy Story 2, which has now reclaimed the title), holding a perfect 100% approval rating on the site.

Now one Cole Smithey has brought down the film by 1% with his rotten tomato, describing the Saoirse Ronan starrer as “far from a perfect film” though “not the mumblecore disaster you’d expect from [director-writer] Greta Gerwig.” Yeesh.

“There are dozens of coming-of-age films that far outweigh this lightweight contender,” the review reads. “Think ‘Kes’ or ‘Murmur of the Heart.’ Greta Gerwig has a long way to go as a filmmaker before she can pretend to approach a Mike Leigh or a Louis Malle.”

Here are some of Twitter’s reactions to his review:

But what we don’t get is that in spite of giving it a B- grade (or ‘three stars - out of five/ no halves’ as he emphasises in his review), this warrants a ‘rotten tomato’?

Moreover, this is a reviewer who gave Dunkirk and Wonder Woman an ‘F’ grading earlier in the year (which even if people were underwhelmed, few will think are terrible) so take from that what you will.
