As we already reported on earlier today, Wonder Woman continues to have an incredible run at the box office in a summer that's been anything but positive for the major tentpoles.

Therefore, it shouldn't come as any surprise that work's already begun on the sequel to Wonder Woman. According to a report by ScreenRant, Warners' head-honcho over the DCEU, Geoff Johns, and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins have begun sketching out story details for the sequel - and it looks pretty promising so far.

Don't read any further if you don't want spoilers, obviously.

Still here?

So - the story, going by ScreenRant's source, will be something closer to an '80s spy thriller and will be set in the final days of the Cold War, predominantly in Moscow. There's no word yet on who'll be playing the villain, but it's understood that Chris Pine will return as Steve Trevor and that Patty Jenkins is more or less close to signing on again as director.

While Jenkins makes sense as a director, bringing back Chris Pine as Steve Trevor doesn't. For one, he died at the end of the first film and his sacrifice was what inspired Wonder Woman to continue - so how can bringing him back in as Steve Trevor work? The only way it could work is if he somehow bailed out of the plane and survived, but wouldn't that cheapen Wonder Woman's ending?

It's a tricky situation, but it shouldn't come as a surprise that they're trying to crowbar him back in. The on-screen chemistry between Pine and Gadot was one of the film's highlights, so it's easy to try and replicate it than bring in someone new.

Leaving aside this, the idea of a spy thriller-cum-superhero film is an interesting, if familiar one. Captain America: The Winter Soldier borrowed heavily from the likes of Three Days Of The Condor, and that was a critical and commercial hit - so why can't it work for Wonder Woman?

No release date has been set for Wonder Woman 2.
