Although Warcraft wasn't much of a critical success, Duncan Jones' long-gestating sci-fi drama Mute has been hotly anticipated for many years now.

In fact, when we spoke to Jones about Mute last year, he was very much excited about the prospect of working on something original and unique. Judging by these first official images, Mute definitely looks unique and seems to be mixing the visuals of Blade Runner and Nicholas Winding Refn's Drive.

Set in a futuristic version of Berlin, Alexander Skarsgard plays a mute bartender who sets out to find his beautiful girlfriend who's gone missing in the city. Enlisting the help of shady surgeons Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux, Skarsgard's character goes deep into the shady underworld of Berlin for answers.

Duncan Jones is reteaming with cinematogrpaher Gary Shaw, who he worked with on Moon and subsequently went on to do work on TV series Fortitude. Speaking of Moon, Jones also confirmed that both Moon and Mute are set in the same universe, but didn't give any further details on how the two films are connected, if at all.

Both Moon and Source Code were excellent sci-fi films and despite Warcraft not exactly hitting the right notes with audiences and critics, there were still some points of the film that were definitely interesting. Mute, however, looks like a solid return to form for Jones and it'll be exciting to see what happens next in his career.

Mute will be released on Netflix at some stage in 2017.
