Exciting stuff.

As previously reported, the director behind the Lord of the Rings and subsequent Hobbit trilogy, Peter Jackson, will next produce The Mortal Engines, based on the novel by Phillip Reeves.

The film is set in a dystopian future where Earth's few remaining cities now traverse the planet on giant mechanical legs and battle one another for resources.

It was also previously announced that Irish actors Robbie Sheehan, best-known for playing Darren in Love/Hate, and Ronan Raftery of Moone Boy fame will be joining the cast. Hera Hilmar and Stephen Lang are also on board.

The latest announcement in relation to the film is more exciting again as none other than Hugo Weaving – best-known for playing Elrond in the LOTR and Hobbit movies (although he’s also famous of course for playing Agent Smith in The Matrix) – will be entering the fantasy world of Jackson’s latest.

In fact a whole bunch of the LOTR crew are attached to The Mortal Engines including the hit fantasy trilogy’s writers (Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens) and producer (Zane Weiner).
