He's still on our screens as a gangster (sorry, politician), but Tom Vaughn-Lawlor's making a move to big screen.

Everyone's favourite Dublin gangster has landed himself a role in Jim Sheridan's new film, The Secret Scripture.

Based on the bestselling novel by Sebastian Barry, the adaptation will star Rooney Mara, Vanessa Redgrave, Jeremy Irons and Eric Bana.

Our own Jack Reynor will star alongside Vaughn-Lawlor, who's also starring in RTE's hugely successful miniseries, Charlie.

The novel takes place in a mental hospital in Roscommon where an elderly woman begins to write her autobiography. The story charts the political and religious intolerances and abuses of Ireland in the 1930's and how she came to be placed in a mental hospital.

It's not yet known what role Vaughn-Lawlor will play, although the actor has said he's eager to expand into more film roles.

You'll always be King Nidge to us, brother.
